Romantic love is a journey filled with twists, turns, and, sometimes, misconceptions. One of the most common pitfalls is the confusion between infatuation and true love. These two emotional states may seem similar at first glance, but they operate on completely different planes. Whether you sighed in agreement or rolled your eyes in disagreement, let’s quickly dive into a couple of differentiators.

The Test of Time

Infatuation hits like a lightning bolt, a sudden surge of passion that can leave us breathless. That said, much like any flash sale, that fiery intensity is often short-lived. Now, true love, on the other hand, it’s a slow burn, similar to my favorite beef stew — developing gradually over time in a stable, enduring flame. Because, let’s face it, good things, whether it’s love or stew, take time to simmer to perfection, or almost perfection.

Idealization & Reality

Infatuation tends to be built on an idealized image of the other person. It’s like looking at the world through an aperture, where flaws are overlooked, and the focus is solely on a perfected version of the individual.
